Recently I was talking to a floral industry colleague about the tragedy of the huge loss of retail florists over the past decade. We’ve gone from over 26,000 florists to under 13,000 currently and many more are likely to cease business as each year passes. The colleague then asked me why I even bother to try to help retailers. “They are sometimes their own worst enemies,” he explained. “Why waste your time?” His words made me think of something written by the noted anthropologist and writer Loren Eiseley: “Once upon a time, there was a wise man who used to go to the ocean to do his writing. He had a habit of walking on the beach before he began his work. One day, as he was walking along the shore, he looked down the beach and saw a human figure moving like a dancer. He smiled to himself at the thought of someone who would dance to the day, and so, he walked faster to catch up. As he got closer, he noticed that the figure was that of a young man, and that what he was doing was not dancing at all. The young man was reaching down to the shore, picking up small objects, and throwing them into the ocean. He came closer still and called out “Good morning! May I ask what it is that you are doing?” The young man paused, looked up, and replied “Throwing starfish into the ocean.” “I must ask, then, why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?” asked the somewhat startled wise man. To this, the young man replied, “The sun is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them in, they’ll die.” Upon hearing this, the wise man commented, “But, young man, do you not realize that there are miles and miles of beach and there are starfish all along every mile? You can’t possibly make a difference!” At this, the young man bent down, picked up yet another starfish, and threw it into the ocean. As it met the water, he said, “It made a difference for that one.” What if we could organize into a whole group of starfish throwers? Maybe we could make quite a difference!!
Would you pay 5 cents more a stem for a rose that lasted twice as long?
Recent studies by the American Floral Endowment (AFE) found that consumers preferred to give and receive flowers that lasted longer, and would be willing to pay more if they were offered longer lasting flowers. This poses the question: “Would you pay more for flowers that lasted longer?” When fuel prices go up, so do fuel surcharges which increase the price of flowers. And flower prices usually increase before major holidays. And what more do you get for those increased prices? Nothing. So, if you were offered roses that cost 5 cents more a stem, would you pay it if they lasted twice as long as roses you’re currently buying?

Caring of Flowers
Flowers, like humans, respond best to a little tender loving care. No, you don’t have to hug them, but a few basic guidelines will ensure your flowers maintain their perkiness for longer after you receive them.
General care tips
o Hand Tieds
As these are arranged for you and tied together, the first rule is not to cut the binding string. It doesn’t harm the flowers and it means the bouquet will stay looking gorgeous. If it’s been delivered aquapacked i.e. there’s a bubble of water around the stems hold the bouquet over a sink and cut the bottom off the film. This way the water will pour down the sink not over you.
If you receive an arrangement, it will have been made in a water retaining foam. This will need topping up every couple of days. Simply dribble water into the centre of the design or at the back where a good florist will have made a small nick into the foam.
